In the mid-1800s, a group of painters based in New York turned their focus to the theme of the natural landscape to demonstrate the beauty of the wilderness. Their work enjoyed a popular national success that no other group of artists has achieved since. This seminal survey of the artists marks the first presentation of the outstanding collection at the New-York Historical Society. It features works by all the greatest artists of the group, including Thomas Cole, Asher Durand, Albert Bierstadt, and Frederic Church. Accompanying a major traveling exhibition, the book is also timed to coincide with the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson’s first voyage up the Hudson River.

The Hudson River School Nature and the AmericanVision NewYork Historical Society Linda S Ferber 9780847832644 Books Reviews

  • I purchased this because I wanted a book about the New-York Historical Society and its colleciton. The text about the Hudson River School was interesting and different from other books I have. Plenty of high quality color illustrations.
  • This is a beautifully balanced book, blending relevant and insightful text with more than 100 gorgeous reproductions paintings. I love this book.
  • This is an AMAZING book! So much information about the artworks and artists! Lots of beautiful reproductions as well! It was a gift and she ABSOLUTELY Loved it! I would highly recommend it!
  • I was looking for a detailed overview of the artists of the Hudson River School.
This was just what I wanted. It starts in New York and goes up the river in location and
forward in history. Eventually going beyond the Hudson to the West and South America.
A lot of the understanding of art comes from the history context. This book had an excellent
blend of both. Very helpful to understand the motivations and meanings. It put this genre
in context with the other movements in the 19th century. It also lead me into purchasing
deeper monographs on the artists that I liked.
  • Great book for those who like the Hudson River School!
  • Gorgeous color reproductions, insightful historical context. The definitive guide to the artists of the Hudson River School. I love it!
  • The plates are gorgeous
  • Great book! Nice pictures. But mine (hardcover) came in warped.

Talk English The Secret to Speak English Like a Native in 6 Months for Busy People Audible Audio Edition Ken Xiao Scott P Delaney Fluent English Publishing Books Reviews

  • How can someone write a book that has so many grammatical mistakes while claiming they will teach you how to speak like a native speaker . The author needs to go back to English classes himself.
  • Every one knows the rules. Not something very special. And the writing is not very good. I don.t know why there are so many positive reviews.
  • Your book is an anchor in the vast and deep ocean of learning English. It saved me from frustration and confusion of not knowing how to go from a broken english to fluent, I still have long way to go to have an ideal accent and I might face disappiontments, but at least now I the key to solving the problem thanks for your good work.
The book is good for those know english well but want to speak fluently and faster. I don't have anything more to say.
  • I'm not sure who the audience for this book is. There are no English lessons, or even common phrases to help you bridge the gap from bad English speaking to clearer conversation. There are no steps, no guides, just anecdotes from the author on how he convinced himself to get better at "Talking English", but of course, I'm sure he meant "Speaking English". It is 90 pages of "Just believe in yourself". Buy this book if you have 7 bucks and a desire to get rid of them. I bought this for my wife without looking at any excerpts, and that is my fault. I'm returning this "book" immediately.
  • I thought the description made it sound like a work book with school room type activities. It is not. It is like a poorly written self help book, describing how to set goals and where to practice. It does NOT contain hard fast grammar rules or any sort of help with pronunciation. In fact, I found a lot of grammatical errors within. It may be what some people want but it was not what I needed. I focused too much on the price. You get what you pay for, I suppose.
  • Oh my! I enjoyed this book a lot. That Inspired me to learn English the way I had dream for so long. Thank you so much! I am high recommend.
  • You know at the first time I saw this title of the book , I just didn't realize that it would work . But when I took a glimpse of the contents , reviews ,and introductory I felt like I was shocked. And when I started reading the whole book I realized that this book proved me wrong. I don't know what to say right now and I think that if I had read this book before I began university I'm a hundred percent sure that I'm going to be a speaker like a native English today. Thank for all your effort to make this book happen, it is really really helpful for us who want to be like a native English speaker.
  • This book is for foreign speakers who may know who to read or write English, but have trouble speaking it. I must say I was remarkably surprised at how well it was written and formatted. The book has great tips on not only the secret to speaking English, but also how and where to implement them. I recommend to anyone who is struggling, or maybe lacks the confidence to move forward with their skills.

Conversational Italian Dialogues Over 100 Italian Conversations and Short Stories Conversational Italian Dual Language Books Vol 1 Italian Edition eBook Lingo Mastery Reviews

  • I love learning new languages and mingling with local people while traveling the world. I’ve picked up this book, hoping to learn some basic Italian to break the ice with the locals on my upcoming trip to Italy.

I like that this book focuses on common situations such as “The Tourist Information Office” or “Train Tickets,” which non-Italian tourists are likely to incur. I also like the repetition of common words and phases in various contexts; I remember more by repeating. The English equivalents of Italian phrases help me effortlessly understand their colloquial meanings; for example, “meno male” means either “thank goodness” or “great.”

I wish to see an accompanying audio version of this book that would help me retain new Italian words and phases; conversational goes hand-in-hand with audible.

Overall, this book helps me tremendously in my ongoing journey into conversational Italian.
  • I have been taking Italian lessons for the past seven months, with a private tutor (insegnante). While we have concentrated on grammar for the most part, we started with pronunciation, and we have both felt that I need to speak and hear the language more in order to "get it".

This has been the one deficiency, not actually speaking Italian a whole lot. I saw this book, and thought, perfect, I can read the dialogs out loud and look up words I'm not sure of the pronunciation. After it arrived I took it to class one day, and la mia insegnanate absolutely loved it. We role play, and she takes one character and I do the other (and switch) and not only do I speak a lot more, and a lot more correctly,, but the thing she really loved was being able to show me all the things we've been learning, the pronouns (especially, as these can be difficult), the expressions, etc., in action.

The dialogs are not that complicated, I know a lot of words already, and she liked that. She also teaches me what things mean really, in Italy (she is from Padova, near Venezia). The book has added a whole new dimension to our classes. We spend time every class doing a new dialog, sometimes if there is an abundance of teaching moments in the dialog (as there often is) we might spend parts of two classes on one dialog.

I have bought a number of Learn Italian books. And this one is by far the best. If you are really trying to learn to speak Italian, buy this book (I have both the and paperback- the is good because you can highlight passages and paste them into Google and hear how words are pronounced (highly recommended)).

This has accelerated my learning, and made all the grammar rules make much more sense. Answering questions at the end of a chapter of a learning book is fine, but this book puts all the grammar rules to practical use, with normal conversations.

    It's great. Super recommended.
  • I received this book this morning and just thumbing through it looks very helpful in learning Italian. I like grammar but need to know how to use it and this book helps! Thanks Lingo!
  • We don't study a language to be able to read it. We study a language to be able to speak it. This book provides useful examples for understanding dialogue and conversation. Speaking with another person and understanding what is being said.
  • I'm always looking for ways to practice and improve my Italian. This book was a great find. It's packed with practical dialogues and information you can incorporate into your everyday conversations.
  • The book had some very interesting stories, and was a good way to refresh my rusty Italian. It should help my upcoming trip to Venice.
  • I loved the book. It was informative. I learned a lot. I would highly recommend it!!!
  • I like the “pre-selected” common conversations one is likely to encounter. These allow you to practice conversations so you can prepare for real situations.

From a former Israeli intelligence officer comes the most realistic, thrilling and authentic thriller of the year.

Chinese gangsters and Israeli intelligence face off in Paris - Israel's best-selling book of 2017, perfect for fans of Homeland, John Le Carré and Mick Herron.

When an Israeli tech entrepreneur disappears from Charles de Gaulle airport with a woman in red, logic dictates youthful indiscretion. But Israel is on a state of high alert nonetheless. Colonel Zeev Abadi, the new head of Unit 8200's autonomous Special Section, who just happens to be in Paris, also just happens to have arrived on the same flight.

For Commissaire Léger of the Paris Police, coincidences have their reasons, and most are suspect. When a second young Israeli is kidnapped soon after arriving on the same flight, this time at gunpoint from his hotel room, his suspicions are confirmed - and a diplomatic incident looms.

Back in Tel Aviv, Lieutenant Oriana Talmor, Abadi's deputy, is his only ally, applying her sharp wits to the race to identify the victims and the reasons behind their abduction. In Paris a covert Chinese commando team listens to the investigation unfurl and watches from the rooftops. While by the hour the morgue receives more bodies from the river and the city's arrondissements.

The clock has been set. And this could be a long night in the City of Lights.

A Long Night in Paris Audible Audio Edition Dov Alfon Matt Addis MacLehose Press Books Reviews

  • Maybe it's me (in fact it probably is) but I found the Israeli names, words and phrases in this book a little confusing at first. But once you get your head around it all, this is a decent read, with lots of insight into the complicated world of politics, state secrets and espionage. A nice read and I'd be interested in reading this author again.
  • Ok, I love detective novels, spies and thrillers. And I love all things about Israel. So this book was meant for me. It’s like Jack Bauer’s 24. Takes place in a day. The plot takes your breath away. The writing is fantastic. One of the best I’ve read in a long time. Worth buying in hard cover.
  • Just published in the UK, A Long Night In Paris comes with a pedigree of success for its native Hebrew edition. It was #1 Israeli best-seller, 22 weeks in the best-seller lists, and the fastest and biggest Israeli best-seller of 2016. Both TV and Movie rights have been sold. And it deserves the praise and plaudits it has won.

Dov Alfon is a former Israeli intelligence officer, and he clearly knows and understands what he is writing about. An Israeli citizen is mysteriously ‘disappeared’ at Charles de Gaulle airport having just arrived on a flight from Tel Aviv. A group of Chinese commandos are implicated – but did they seize the ‘wrong’ man? Is the ‘right’ man still out there and in danger? Colonel Abadi, the head of Special Section of Unit 8200 of Israeli security, just happens to be in Paris – and decides to investigate. He is aided by a French police inspector – who is increasingly alarmed and embarrassed as bodies appear on his patch, and by Oriana – his deputy back in Israel. The Inspector has enemies in the French establishment, and Abadi has enemies in high places back in Israel. They have to watch their backs as they try and figure out what is going on.

A Long Night In Paris is fast moving and bloody. It is also extremely well written (and well translated). Unlikely as the plot may be – Chinese commandos roaming Paris – the story doesn’t come over as anything but possible. It is detailed, well thought through, and plausible. It is also a fascinating and (given Dov’s background) quite likely to be true insight into the politics and scheming of the various branches of Israeli intelligence. One of the Israeli reviewers compares Dov to John le Carré in his complexity and style. Maybe a little over the top, but I can certainly see where he is coming from.

The book works well in TripFiction location terms. Dov now lives in Paris and uses his knowledge of the city to good effect. The Israeli scenes – set in Tel Aviv and the Negev desert – also have the ring of truth and experience.

A book that I found hard to put down which, for me, is always the mark to a good thriller.
  • Lots of action is packed into Dov Alfon’s debut novel, Israel’s bestselling book of 2016-2017, now available in English. It’s hard to believe so much can happen in little more than twenty-four hours!
The story begins one morning when a gregarious Israeli software engineer disappears from the arrivals hall of Charles de Gaulle Airport. An irrepressible flirt, he peels off from a group of colleagues to link up with a beautiful blonde before the two seemingly disappear into thin air.
Police Commissaire Jules Léger grudgingly organizes an investigation, predictably hampered by too many cooks airport security, the Israeli police representative for Europe, a mysterious Israeli security colonel named Zeev Abadi, and, most uncooperative of all, El Al security.
Abadi is a Tunisian Jew raised in the Paris suburbs. Not until midnight does he assume his official role as the new head of Israeli intelligence’s SIGINT unit. Temporarily in charge of the unit back in Tel Aviv, with minuscule bureaucratic power, is Lieutenant Oriana Talmor.
At the airport, Abadi uncovers footage showing the hapless Israeli attacked by a pair of Chinese thugs and thrown into a sewer pit where survival is impossible. Abadi soon realizes the attack was a case of mistaken identity. He must figure out who was the actual intended victim and calls on Talmor her team back in Israel for help. Separated by more than two thousand miles, the two try to uncover the identity of the intended victim, his current location, and the reasons he’s a murder target.
Although most of the short chapters are written from the point of view of Abadi, Talmor, or Léger, some are from clueless higher-ups in the Israeli and French governments, the various criminal operatives involved, and the real quarry of the killers, a young man named Vladislav Yerminski. What you mostly learn about him is that he’s checked into an expensive hotel with a suitcase full of electronic gadgetry. (I forget how that bag got through Tel Aviv’s airport security, if I ever knew.)
It’s a multinational cast of characters and you’re well along before you realize what game Yerminski is playing and who’s behind the mysterious gang of Chinese pursuing him. All the bureaucrats are busy trying to spin the first victim’s undignified death in a way that masks the shortcomings and errors in their own intelligence work. Even though I couldn’t quite believe in the criminal mastermind whose Chinese assassins murdered the wrong man, I totally believed that they work in a rogue system that does not tolerate error.
Alfon came to the writing of this book with the perfect resume. He knows Paris, having been born and raised there. He is himself a former intelligence officer in the Israeli Intelligence Corps’ Unit 8200, which is responsible for signals intelligence (SIGINT) and code decryption. His political acumen was honed as a former cultural observer and editor in chief of Israel’s major newspaper, Ha’aretz, and he served as an editor for Israel’s largest publishing house. The translation flows smoothly as well.
  • I don’t read a lot of spy thrillers as I find them a bit confusing and full of insider knowledge that only someone in the field would get. This is different I am happy to say. There’s a lot to like and a lot to make you gasp as you wonder what’s true and what’s not.

The author has worked in the field and it shows. The opening ‘sequence’ (as this could easily be a film) was taunt and gripping. Lots of red herrings, mistaken identities, mayhem and murders.

I also felt I learned a lot about the Israeli secret services and how they work together and with other national departments. The novel largely takes place in Paris and there’s some brilliantly creepy and secret locations used here. However, the mysterious Israeli Unit 8200 military intelligence corps (they do seem to fight and squabble a lot!) and a Chinese criminal gang lurk in the background to ramp up the tension and the suspicion.

One of the things I really found interesting were the snippets of tourist information and thoughts, political ideas and more to illustrate part of the story. Clever way to inform and entertain. Definitely makes this a spy thriller with heart and soul.

A multilayered spy thriller which would make a gripping film too.

MemoryMaking Mom Building Traditions That Breathe Life Into Your Home Jessica Smartt 9780785221227 Books Reviews

  • This book is so well-written and encouraging - I wholeheartedly recommend it! You may be thinking that you don't NEED this book because you're already pretty good at making memories. Or you might be nervous to read it because you are worried you're a failure in the memory-making department. No matter where you find yourself, you will love this book!
I didn't read it and feel guilty about my parenting and a lack of traditions so far. When I finished Memory-Making Mom, I was feeling encouraged - motivated, and ready to start creating new traditions to share with my kids. I appreciate how the author not only shares the who, what, when, where, and how for making lasting traditions, but most importantly, the why. I think anyone who reads this book will take away some good practical ideas and tips, but even more a better understanding of why making memories is important.
This book is going to be my new go-to gift for expectant moms (along with the Jesus Storybook Bible). It's the kind of book that would really be beneficial to read as you prepare your heart and home for being a mother (or father too). I wish I had the chance to read this book years ago! But as the author reminds us that it's never too late to start making traditions with your family.
  • I WISH I'd had access to this book 10 years ago! But even though my kids are mostly grown, there are STILL ideas I'm going to use. In fact, there are SO many ideas, you can't go wrong with this book!

Jessica understands (so much!) what it's like to mother littles. She's also just a regular person like me, who wants to make memories with her kids and she's tired and overwhelmed some days and still, she's finding ways to give her children a childhood worth remembering. Also, she makes the reader feel like we can do it too!

This book will help anyone in any stage of motherhood (or GRANDmotherhood). Just one idea found within its pages might make an ENORMOUS difference to one child you love. It's an easy, quick read and worth every moment.
  • This book has been a wonderful blessing to our family! In it, Jessica makes the case for why building family traditions is important, then goes on to give practical suggestions we can put into practice without losing our minds. Not only has this been a handy reference book for me to look to when we need more FUN and SPECIAL and WHIMSY in our family, but it's challenged me on a deeper level to consider what kind of mom I want to be and what I want my kids to remember when they fly the coop! I would highly recommend this book to moms with kids of any age!
  • I was worried when I started reading this book that it would make me feel like a failure as a mama and point out the things that I was not doing correctly, or even often enough. I was so pleasantly surprised once I got started to realize that it was not that type of book at all!

This book is full of tips and tricks on how to build traditions that will carry on for years to come. I feel more energized and enthusiastic about creating these moments so that my kids can look back fondly at the things that we have done. This book will not just be read one time, but will be read over and over as I get into that slump in my parenting. This book would be a great gift to the mom who is bored with her parenting, or just the mom who wants to add different aspects to her life. I would recommend this book to all moms! If nothing else, it gets the conversation started about what traditions you would like to have in your home.

The hilarious New York Times bestselling picture book about dealing with unexplained feelings...and the danger in suppressing them!

Jim the chimpanzee is in a terrible mood for no good reason. His friends can't understand it--how can he be in a bad mood when it's SUCH a beautiful day? They encourage him not to hunch, to smile, and to do things that make THEM happy. But Jim can't take all the advice...and has a BIT of a meltdown. Could it be that he just needs a day to feel grumpy?

Suzanne and Max Lang bring hilarity and levity to this very important lesson. This picture book is an excellent case study in the dangers of putting on a happy face and demonstrates to kids that they are allowed to feel their feelings (though they should be careful of hurting others in the process!).

"I wish I had had this book as a child. I think it's important for children to learn that it's fine to "have moods" or "be grumpy." It's OKAY for children--and girls especially--to not have to "please" all the time or always be "on." I am getting this book for all children under 10 that I know. 10 might be a too-advanced upper limit. Lovely illustrations. Thumbs up."

Grumpy Monkey Suzanne Lang Max Lang 9780553537864 Books Reviews

  • As a school librarian, health and wellness teacher, voracious reader, and grandmother, I often think about reviewing a book, but there are so many other things to do. I HAD to write about this one. The message is powerful and communicated in a humorous, undidactic manner, in large part thanks to the deeply appealing, funny and poignant illustrations. It would be hard to find someone who couldn't relate to Jim Panzee. I LOVE this book.
  • The art instantly drew me to this book. I’m a storyboard artist myself and really appreciate the simplistic yet expressive drawing. It’s adorable and a cute read. Excited to read this to my baby niece once she starts talking.
  • I know this book has really good reviews but we spend time telling our grandchildren they have the ability to change how they feel. The book suggests being a grouch is ok.
  • I wish I had had this book as a child. I think it's important for children to learn that it's fine to "have moods" or "be grumpy." • This is a great book for children and adults alike. Great message about feeling feelings, and being a good friend.
  • My two year old daughter LOVES to read along with this book, and mimics the grumpy faces in the mirror.
  • I was thrilled to find this book so I can read it to my Grumpy Monkey. It is a great book for children.
  • We've had this book for only a few days and I've already read it about 25 times... my almost 2 yo daughter loves it! This instantly trumped all of her other favorites. Its a cute story and message and the illustrations are great. I do enjoy reading it... just not so many times in a row!

  • This book reaches out , stretching, and challenging a believer on Christ to unravel the questions held in secret places and to seek for oneself where we what kind of relationship we desire with God. It struck a cord, where am I in my walk with God and where do I want to be.
  • Great little book that summarizes the unseen forces of the kingdom of heaven. Love these short but powerful books anointed by the Holy Spirit.
  • Go buy all the books. You don't want to miss out on any of his teaching.
  • Great book an eye opener a must read for all serious christians and ministers of God.

I will surely recommend this book to my brethren
  • This book blessed me and helped me grow to look to God first in all things. Taught me to live in a daily close vital union with my Lord.
  • I have no idea what I was to understand better about the unseen realm from reading this. Half the book was promoting other books of the author. Glad the book was short

A provocative and thoroughly researched inquiry into what we find beautiful and why, skewering the myth that the pursuit of beauty is a learned behavior.

In Survival of the Prettiest, Nancy Etcoff, a faculty member at Harvard Medical School and a practicing psychologist at Massachusetts General Hospital, argues that beauty is neither a cultural construction, an invention of the fashion industry, nor a backlash against feminism - it's in our biology.

Beauty, she explains, is an essential and ineradicable part of human nature that is revered and ferociously pursued in nearly every civilization - and for good reason. Those features to which we are most attracted are often signals of fertility and fecundity. When seen in the context of a Darwinian struggle for survival, our sometimes extreme attempts to attain beauty - both to become beautiful ourselves and to acquire an attractive partner - suddenly become much more understandable. Moreover, if we understand how the desire for beauty is innate, then we can begin to work in our own interests, and not just the interests of our genetic tendencies.

"This is a pretty decent book but not extraordinary. It brings together many of the current observations relating to beauty (especially the female variety) but is not overly scientific -- i.e., it doesn't get bogged down in technicalities or jargon. Similarly, it relies on a Darwinian framework for interpretation but is not overly adamant about ev-psych's ability to explain everything about human behavior. I especially liked the first chapter, which reads more like an essay on beauty past and present than an intro to a science book.
If there was any complaint, it was that the author wasn't daring enough and doesn't introduce any really breathtakingly new ideas. I got the impression she was mainly reporting on others' research, and I think Etcoff missed (in the next-to-last chapter) the interesting fact that in the last decade (or so) fashion seems to have flowed from the lower classes upwards, whereas throughout the rest of history it's been the other way, which is sort of what she presumes to still be the case. This doesn't detract seriously from the earlier material, which showed a touch more originality of approach. An interesting topic pretty well-covered, even if not ground-breaking in any way."

Survival of the Prettiest The Science of Beauty Audible Audio Edition Nancy Etcoff Donna Postel Tantor Audio Books Reviews

  • I love this book. I read it when it first came out as a library book, and it helped me with little beauty hacks that doubled my tips as a cocktail waitress. A great starter read for those who want to learn the system. ;)

Beyond that, it boasts some interesting studies and science-backed tricks, though it's NOT an instruction manual. Use it to guide your research further (disclaimer I'm SUPER into biological anthropology. A very fun read that digests quickly.

I heartily recommend it to any woman (though men would benefit from reading it too).
  • Contrary to what many people think there are certain features of the human body and face that have always been considered attractive, in all cultures. That is, beauty is not an invention of the media any more than cuteness is an invention of Disney (Bambi, the movie, exploited our instinctive judgements of what is cute). Neither is beauty merely in the eye of the beholder. Yet, having said that, both the media and the perceiver matters, just not as much as people tend to think.

In this book Nancy Etcoff from Harvard University provides a fast paced, thoroughly researched, rich and enjoyable account of attractiveness. She provides answers to all the main questions that usually come up when attractiveness is discussed. Here is a non exhaustive list, which the basic answer

    Q What is attractive?
A Averageness, symmetry, Big eyes (women), large cheekbones (men)

Q When did people start to care so much about their appearance?
A Since the dawn of time

Q Are we nicer to more attractive individuals
    A Yes

Q Why are certain traits considered attractive?
A Because they are indicators of underlying qualities, such as health or fertility

These are rough answers, and there are many important and interesting details which cannot be covered in a short review such as this. Thankfully, Etcoff goes into full detail, and even though I am sort of a minor expert on attractiveness (have published a couple of studies on memory biases associated with attractiveness), I learned many things from this book. Etcoff’s style of writing is reminiscent of Steven Pinker. Both are masters when it comes to referencing a ton of literature from very divergent sources (books, TV-shows, published articles, archeological findings, poetry etc), in a short amount of text, without affecting the flow of that text. In fact Etcoff made such an impression on me that I am almost certain to buy her next book (if she writes one), independent of what that book is about.
  • Nancy Etcoff presents her research in a clear and engaging way. This book is even more relevant today with eating disorder hysteria (if media causes it, why don’t we all have them?) and the “self-esteem” movement, which is just another way to disempower women. And the chapter on primate genitalia is hilarious, plus full of fun facts to share at parties during a lull in conversation.
  • This book let me finally come to terms with beauty as something all humans are attracted to as an evolutionary necessity. That beautiful people have a societal advatage is a given but just means the rest of us must work a bit harder. Having beauty alone is rarely enough though; one has to apply one's talents and intellect to compete in the world and to contribute successfully. This book has been well researched and the author has approached the subject in a friendly manner.
  • This is definitely a book that gets you thinking. I have read it multiple times and finally had to buy a copy to keep.
  • This is a pretty decent book but not extraordinary. • Pros Comprehensive, scientific, and helpful

Cons The table of contents & the chapters are vague, it is hard to distinguish between headings & paragraphs
